"Polperro must be one of the most painted venues in the world, but that never detracts from its allure. This was done as a demonstration, showing how very few colours are needed to produce a successful image. I've used water-mixable oils for this, as they are very user friendly, especially for workshops and classes. A very popular subject for art society demonstrations". A variation on the technique is to use the 'lifting out' method, where the image gradually appears from a dull grey background, which is wiped off to show the shapes of the buildings. Once seen never forgotten!
